Crew Begins Unloading Progress, Preparing for Departures

Aboard their orbital home, the members of the International Space Station’s Expedition 24 crew began the process Monday of unloading the ISS Progress 39 cargo craft, which automatically docked to the aft port of the Zvezda service module Sunday.

The resupply vehicle brought to the orbiting complex 1,918 pounds of propellant, 110 pounds of oxygen, 375 pounds of water and 2,645 pounds of spare parts, experiment hardware and other supplies for the station’s six crew members. Once emptied, Progress 39 will be filled with trash and station discards and deorbited to burn in the Earth’s atmosphere like its predecessors.

Flight Engineer Doug Wheelock worked on troubleshooting the station’s Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly, or CDRA, which shares responsibility for revitalizing the station’s atmosphere with a similar Russian system. CDRA has two pairs of “beds” that alternately collect or expel the gas byproduct of human breathing from the station. The system has been running on only one pair of “beds.”

In the European Columbus laboratory, Flight Engineer Shannon Walker worked with the Smoke Aerosol Measurement Experiment (SAME), which is inside the Microgravity Science Glovebox. SAME measures smoke properties to provide data to support requirements for smoke detection in space and identify ways to improve smoke detectors on future spacecraft.

Flight Engineer Fyodor Yurchikhin worked with the Matryoshka-R experiment. The Russian payload is designed for sophisticated radiation studies and is named after the traditional Russian set of nested dolls.

Flight Engineer Tracy Caldwell Dyson worked on replacing a filter in the station’s Potable Water Dispenser in the crew’s galley.

With less than two weeks remaining in their stay aboard the orbital complex, Caldwell Dyson, Commander Alexander Skvortsov and Flight Engineer Mikhail Kornienko spent time preparing for their departure on the evening of Sept. 23, U.S. time, aboard the Soyuz TMA-18.
