Are these scinetists implying that instead of a clean smooth canvas, spacetime might be more like a crinkled up sponge? The problem with the Einstein-Rozen Bridge is that the opening on either end of the "Tunnel" is a Singularity. Take a star with tens of times the mass of the sun, crush it down to microscopic density, and yeah, the laws of the univers tend to break down across the vague region we like to call a "Black Hole."
Now, in order to actually Use a "wormhole" you not only have to leave the universe by crossing the event horizon, (which you can't escape without breaking the speed of light, which is the whole reason to look for tunnels between black holes in the first place) but you also have to not get disintegrated by tidal forces on the way in/out, compress yourself enough to pass through the densest mater possible in the universe (So dense it breaks it)twice, because there's another singularity at the other end. That's IF they're naturally occurring, which is theoretically possible, but we don't have any idea what mechanism could cause that to happen. We'll estimate those odds as pretty damned unlikely, and compound that times the odds of it going where you want it to. Now, we have theories on how we could make one, through quantum entanglement. All we'd have to do is create 2 masses, each tens of times the mass of the solar system, with identical masses, and spins, then accelerate one to take it clear across space to where we want to go, and then work out the relatively minor problem of passing through both singularities intact, and breaking the light barrier to escape the event horizon when we get there. Yep. Which even presumes that their maths are correct, and it (and all of our physics models BTW) aren't artifacts and errors.
The one faint promise with this theory is that IF entanglement is true, it MIGHT be possible to create an array of synthetic entangled pairs that can produced "wormhole" effects without requiring the blackhole masses of a natural one. It would be a plane only a single particle thick, very much like the "StarGate" sci-fi concept. The biggest technical problem then becomes the same one as also one from SG, your "wormhole gates" only go as far as you have placed the destination gate. Good for putting the airlines out of business, not so much for interstellar travel, at least in the short-term. |
