Electric battery scheme

So, for use in ground based, and eventually space based vehicles, will make electric cars/trucks/semi-trucks more feasible. Think Belt Fed Machine Gun.... Will work, with any small cell battery, have individual cells have a spring loaded insulating cap on the top and bottom, the when depressed exposes a contact on either side, Have them jointed and able to be separated quickly, So, use battery till empyish then pull up to "Gas Station" and hook up a "feeder" that grabs both ends of a belt of these, pulling on one side and taking out the used batteries, and feeding in the new, once it is complete, it stores the batteries somewhere and charges and tests them..... to be used again. http://www.pasteall.org/pic/show.php?id=42050 _________________ Let not the bindings of society hold you back from improving it.... the masses follow where the bold explore. |

Would be most useful for an application where you need a capacitor for the entire charge in one sharp draw. Otherwise you are dragging around a lot of dead weight in cells that either are fully drained or sitting idle instead of contributing to the charge.
I suppose you could eject the spent batteries, just like a machine gun ejects spent cartridge cases. But that's not very eco friendly. |

They are all used in series, so you empty them all as one giant battery, it's really just for scale-ability and fast recharge(reload), its really the same as a regular battery, just spit into legos....

Eh, I think it wouldn't be worth the complication or expense. This would be heavier than what is already used. A lot of battery packs are already "modular" in that they consist of a number of cells wired and shrink wrapped together. That is probably good enough for most applications. I can't think of a reason why you would need a quickly field configurable storage system either.
It's an interesting idea, just not for the one you describe. |

If I have a electric car, and I want to refill in under 5 minutes, you can swap out batteries, this is just a means to that end without lugging a 500+ pound mass about, and its putting in the new at the same time it removes the old,

This doesn't improve the battery's power density, in fact it's less efficient because of the "waste" of space from the links and feed track you would need and that you will get more resistance loss from all of the exposed contacts on each cell. So for the same A.h., this system will actually need to be larger AND heavier.
It's not any better from a service perspective because you are going to need equipment to do either, a lift/hoist to pick up a solid battery pack or an feed/extraction system to handle that belt of batteries. You may be able to lift out/switch a battery, but this covers a lot more then that,
1. You can use this on any size vehicle. 2. "Gas stations" exchange the batteries, and do maintenance replacement etc. think of it as "Battery Insurance" 3. This could drop production costs for each piece, which makes the whole thing more viable 4.
