I was just watching the launch of GSLV-D3, and it's clear there's been a mission failure.
The initial part of the launch went fine, but soon after the indigenous cryo engine on the upper stage was ignited, things went awry. Telemetry was soon lost after that. Apparently, the 2 vernier thrusters that add control stability didn't perform correctly, causing the upper stage to tumble out of control. |

ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan has declared that the mission did not meet its required objectives, but has promised a full investigation into the causes and said that another launch attempt will take place in a year.

oooo... that's a bummer.
Hopefully they figure out what the issue is pretty quick, and hopefully it's an issue readily corrected. India and China's push into space will either bring competition to the US, or a strong ally. either way, its a win win situation i think |

Oh well, it's failure that builds character, and not success. Hopefully this setback will bring about the required learning for the next success.
ISRO's Radhakrishnan has said there'll be another launch within a year. It's a matter of going through the flight data to see where the fault occurred. |

ISRO now says the flight data confirms that the cryo engine had in fact ignited and burned for ~1 second before a fuel pump failure caused it to shut down:
http://beta.thehindu.com/sci-tech/techn ... 402907.ece The review panel will try to ascertain the cause of the fuel pump failure. |
