Ok, steering during entry/aerobraking is a first for Mars, but not that new. Skycrane is "nuts" at first glance, but if you think about the things involved it isn't really more dangerous/complicated than a powered descent all the way to the surface (Vikings, Phoenix). Given 'current' (think a few years back because such missions take that long to design/build/launch) technology, there pretty much is no other way to land such a heavy payload.  _________________ pride comes before a fall |

 I remember going with my father to see the pathfinder missions' first pictures broadcast. It was cool - they had 3d goggles. I just missed the big moment, as NASA TV dropped their WMV and QuickTime streams and it took me a while to get the Flash-only stream running without Flash. Then again, everyone on Earth missed the big moment by about 15 minutes, so oh well. It's down!
